Eating and Competing – Dietary Considerations

Nutrition is an important part of any athlete or competitors required activities in terms of providing them with the advantage of a well laid out diet and eating plan. The intake of specific food or formulated supplements is essential in both a pre and post exercise or activity basis, and should be given the necessary consideration whether competing on an amateur or professional basis, or even when training.

Two of the most important aspects of the nutrition and dietary intake for the athlete or the fitness enthusiast include that of what to eat and when to eat, and in relation to planned competing or training, whichever the case may be.

When to Eat

Competing or training on a full stomach is certainly not ideal, however we need to have sufficient energy for the actual competing or training that is planned. We will want to consume the supplements or relative dietary plan between one and four hours prior to any training or competing, as any undigested food or contents in the stomach may well cause cramping or even nausea. Each of us is unique and therefore we have to take into account what we consume as well as our personal circumstances in finding which is the best time for such dietary or supplement consumption. Some products are specifically formulated as being easily digestible, and which can be taken quite soon before the exercise, training or competing session. One may also consider the meal replacements or liquid meals closer to the competing or exercise time, as the stomach can digest liquids a lot quicker than solids.

What to Eat

Complex CarbsAlthough this may well be an area of debate, general consensus provides that foods and products high in carbohydrates are ideal for pre exercise or competing phases. This is due to the fact these are in turn converted to glucose and which is used by the body as a source of energy. Once again depending on the specific and unique individual circumstances one may also consider high protein products when looking for additional strength, as well as fuel for muscular activity. One of the most important aspects is to consider the ease of digestion of the product, food or supplement in question.

Planning

Planning is the key activity that will enable you to find the right products, foods or supplements for your own maximum and optimal benefit. As each of us is different when it comes to digestion, dietary requirements and so forth, we need to establish what and which method works best for our individual and specific needs. Once we have identified these important aspects of the process, by tweaking your plan and intake of respective supplements or foods, you will come to realize the best process and option that will align your objectives with your training and workout routines. Aim to seek out that winning formula that works for you, either by trial and error or even with the help of a training partner or nutritional expert.
