The human body, needless to say is a complex entity, providing processes and functions that enable us to function normally and cope with the daily tasks expected of us. However some are more active than others, whilst others may be somewhat overweight and less active – to this end we need to understand how our bodies process foods that we eat, as well as how the body burns or consumes energy within the normal procession of life as such.
There are three main functions within the body, that are attributed to spending the energy we build up in our bodies. The first, and by far the ‘top user’ of energy in the body is that of the Basal Metabolic Rate, and which is followed by digestion and physical activity processes within the body that consumes energy, or otherwise the calories we consume.
According to medical research the basal metabolic rate can consume almost seventy five percent of calories that we consume, making it the top process within the body when it comes to energy use and consumption. There is a relatively complex formula with calculations to workout basal metabolic rate and is referred to as the Harris-Benedict equations. However it has been stated that these provide a basic guideline with respect to the basal metabolic rate, and in order to estimate the dietary consumption of an individual, this cannot be relied upon solely due to the effects of energy consumed within thermogenesis within the body. The process of thermogenesis can be affect by physical activity as well as induced by ones diet, it is also commonly referred to as the heat generated and therefore energy consumed during the digestion process.
This issue of the thermic effect of food is furthermore increased by both anaerobic and aerobic exercise, which highlights the importance of a decent nutritional plan, and more so when conducting regular physical activities such as training the gym. This points to another factor that is extremely important within the issue of nutritional supplements, and is held within the digestibility of the product in question. Looking at products such as whey protein, and the speed at which this is digested allows for one to maintain high levels of activity within a working out scenario, and the very digestive process will contribute to the expenditure of energy too.
A complete nutritional plan, together with your workout plan is essential in achieving the results you are after in terms of fitness and well being. Whey proteins, Creatines, Meal Replacements and so forth can all have a positive effect on your efforts to get to the ideal body weight, and can aid within the provision of energy to be consumed whilst exercising, giving you more endurance and stamina.
