Creatine - Improver of performance
Creatine Monohydrate is a metabolite that functions as a precursor to creatine phosphate, an important energy source in high-intensity training. More important is the beneficial effect on rapid recovery between multiple sprints with short recoveries
Recent research has provided another important benefit of creatine; stimulation glycogen re-synthesis. A trial showed that the muscle clycogen storage was increased from 295 to 487 mmols/kg with the addition of creatine, even though the carbohydrate intake was the same in both trials. This is a whopping 40% increase in glycogen synthesis
How much do I need?
The body needs about 2 gram of Creatine per day to replace the amount that is broken down. Lean meat and fish are good sources and on average supply 1 gram of Creatine per day. The rest of what we need is synthesised from amino acids supplied by the diet.
Athletes who want to build muscle or increase strength and power are likely to benefit from Creatine supplementation. We advice to use 1 gram per 10 kilogram of bodyweight combined with carbohydrates, just before exercise. Vegetarians will need 1.5 gram per 10 kilogram bodyweight.
